[PV] Friendly Fire

Dominating the center of the Dueling Theatre is a large glass dome, inside of which lies the main dueling piste, the field where duelists go head to head for the entertainment of the masses. The glass is designed to be one-way, so that the crowd can see in, but the duellists' side is left foggy and opaque to prevent distraction and interference. Depending on the type of match, the field will either be left bare or filled with various obstacles like magical plants and steep rubble. Large sets of collapsible bleachers surround the dome, which when folded serve as smaller pistes for practice. Four small antechambers serve as locker rooms for each team, each denoted by their house's sigil carved into the door.

It was finally time to put Applied Magic class into, well, Application. After a bunch of theory and a few in-class assignments, this was their biggest assignment yet. A real duel.

Well, as "real" as a duel as you could do with only one spell, the knockback jinx they had been practicing for the past few weeks. But this time it wouldn't be on training dummies, but a real person.

Hell yeah.

Devi slung his bag on the ground as he arrived in the dueling theatre, which was thankfully empty this Sunday afternoon. Maybe because this assignment was due tomorrow, and everyone in their class had completed their duel already.

He selected the small practice piste closest to him and claimed one side for himself, practicing his "flipendo" casting pattern until his assignment partner (and good friend) Tristan walked through the door.

"Yo," Devi nodded in greeting. "You ready?"

He'd let Tristan take as much time as he needed to get into the zone before starting the duel with a bow, just like their professor had instructed, and immediately pointed his wand at Tristan.

"Flipendo!" A burst of white light shot out of Devi's wand, screaming through the air and hitting Tristan square in the chest, sending him reeling backwards. Devon's face fell, that was a bit more intense than what he was expecting. It was... easy to push someone back like that. Scary.

"You okay, man?" He called out in concern, his defences fallen. Would Tristan take advantage of it?
Open me for info on how to duel!
Okay, here's what I'm thinking (also using this as a little trial for the greater dueling system):

We'll go by "rounds", 1 round = 1 post from each of us. Each round, we each take 1 action. The action options are very simple right now:

Push
Cast "flipendo".
Caster rolls 1d20+Sorcery
Target rolls 1d20+Agility

On a hit, the target is pushed 1 space backwards. On a critical hit (rolling a 20 on the dice AND the Target doesn't dodge), the target is pushed back 2 spaces. On a miss, nothing happens.

Step
Move forward 2 spaces.

There are 5 spaces on the piste. The center is space 0, Devi's "side" is the "-" side, Tristan's side is the "+" side. Devi is starting on space -1, Tristan is starting on space +1. The first person to fall off the piste (so be on space - or + 4) loses.

In the event that this system test is a big epic fail, idk we'll figure out something else haha.

Put your chosen action at the bottom of your post. This technically means that you can cheat and make your decision based on what the other person does, but IC, both of our actions happen at the same time. So just try and be fair haha.

Devi cast "Flipendo" this round. I used the site's rolling page for this. He rolled a 13, and you rolled a 8. So in your post, you'll do typical first post stuff, react to his attack and his hit, and take your action. If you also cast flipendo, you'll roll 1d10+7 for Devi's agility.

Hopefully this makes sense. If not, you know where to find me!

Devi hadn’t wasted anytime getting his practice in. Tristan waved over to his friend as he reached the other end of the piste. This was going to be fun. Unfortunately for his opponent, he had gotten a lot of practice in since the assignment had been given. That’s just what you had to do if you wanted to be the best.

“Let’s do it! Don’t go easy on me.”

He smiled at his friend and took a bow. It was time to lock in.

Tristan quickly raised his head to attack, just to be greeted by a burst of white light headed for his chest.

After multiple encounters over the last few months, the ground had become a close friend of his. He fell back on his back in a mix of pain and surprise as gravity betrayed him once more.

So… that’s how it felt to be on the receiving end of a spell. Ow. The hit had packed a punch and knocked the air out of his lungs. The dummies he had trained with hadn’t shot back. Lesson learned.

“You in a hurry, Devi?” Tristan called out with an out-of-breath chuckle as he slowly got back up. “Didn’t think you’d go full Wild West on me! You have got to let me get a shot in, man”

Without wasting a second more, he surged forward with determination. His wand hand lifted above his head, Tristan was poised to strike as he closed the distance between the two duelists.

Was duelling a sport? Devi was unsure. You could for sure get hurt like in sports, and people clearly trained for it, but to "play" wasn't all that physically taxing, not like the football games Devi had played before. There was no running, no strain in the lungs, no steady burn in the muscles. Then again, bowling didn't do that either, and that still counted as a sport.

Whatever the case, like sports, it seemed you could learn a lot about people from how they played. Tristan, for example, was not the kind of person to enter a situation guns a-blazing. Which made it all the more tempting to poke at.

"You have got to let me get a shot in, man,” ” Tristan quipped, quickly closing the distance between them. So he was fast, too. That was good to know.

The young 612020laughed, shifting his weight back half a step as he brought his wand up once more. "You snooze, you lose, man! Flippendo!" The spell cracked through the air, catching Tristan mid-lunge and sending him sliding back to where he’d started. Devon raised his eyebrows teasingly, "Take your shot, bro! We're supposed to be practicing our spellwork, remember?"

Change of plans. Two hits in a row gave Tristan a reason to reconsider his strategy. That being that he should probably start thinking of one. The first shot had just been about reaction time. This second one was because he was reacting instead of playing. What should he be aiming for? Proximity or impact.

“Take your shot, bro! We're supposed to be practicing our spellwork, remember?”

Impact, it was then. Clearly Devi was enjoying himself. He had barely moved an inch while keeping his opponent at bay. At least now, they were back in their starting positions. This meant that he hadn’t lost anything more than a few breaths.

Might as well go for what he should have started with.

“Must have slipped my mind”, he retorted sarcastically. With a practiced flick of the wrist, he aimed straight ahead. “Flippendo!”

Crackling light exited the tip of his wand as it came alive under his incantation. Just as it had hit him, it hit Devi like a punch. The satisfied caster wasn’t too worried about his friend. The spell stung, but it wasn’t that bad. Besides, he had already taken two shots. It was fair retribution.

Tristan straightened his posture and bent his arm behind his back. His wand was pointed forward, palm towards the sky. He smiled.

“Thanks for the advice, Devi! I should listen to you more often”

Devon let out a grunt as Tristan's spell pushed him backwards, his lungs burning in the same way they do when you fall on your back.

“Thanks for the advice, Devi! I should listen to you more often.”

He laughed, shaking off the hit he'd just taken. "I'm a pretty smart guy sometimes."

Man, that spell really packed a punch... "Doesn't it feel a bit weird that we're, like... kind of fighting for a class assignment? They'd never give me anything like this back at my old school. Closest thing was tracking how many minutes we'd exercised in a week for physical education. Pretty sure everyone lied about that though. Flipendo!"

Although Devon was genuinely trying to have a conversation with his friend, he was hoping that his talk would catch Tristan off guard.

It did not work even a little bit, as the spell was so terribly aimed that it simply hit the piste in front of Tristan, who still expertly dodged a smattering of flyaway sparks from the impact.

"Honestly, I'm too nervous to test what would happen if we lied about doing this assignment. I think Professor Corvesso doesn't like me, anyways. Don't want to push it."
