Located in the heart of Snowdonia, Penwick School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is nestled within a mountainous landscape, believed to be where Camelot once stood.
The smallest of all floors, there are only a handful of classrooms and storage rooms here, as most other space is taken up by the tower of House Dranaga and the rather large Headmaster's office constructed by founder Griffith Virell himself. This floor enjoys the most gorgeous views out over the grounds and the valley below, and has the most natural light.
Built from hardened limestone, the third floor of Penwick Castle has a warm and inviting yellowish tint and features plenty of natural light. There are several classrooms and study rooms on this floor, and in the eastern wing, there is a great, long gallery full of portraits of tenured Penwick students and other significant people.
There are many suits of armour in the hallways on the second floor, rumoured to be guarding a great treasure, which often results in nightly escapades and subsequent detentions. Yet some insist that the rumours are true and that Mercator hid something of great value here.
The air is noticeably cool on the first floor, and the light is a little dimmer here than on other floors, though not as dim as the Subterranium. The air is a bit damp here, and some say that's why ghosts can often be found on this floor.
A grand entrance indeed, the ground floor tallest individual floor of Penwick Castle. Voices echo off the arched stone ceilings and marbled floors. This is the central hub of the student body.
This part of the castle sits below the ground level of the castle and is dug into the mountainous rock upon which Penwick stands. The subterranium has several levels of its own, and spiralling staircases lead all the way down to sloping grounds and riverside that border the school.
The Grounds of Penwick are broad, sprawling unevenly across the mountaintop as a patchwork of paths, fields, and ground falling sharply into the cliffs below. The terrain shifts quickly, rolling meadows give way to rocky outcrops, stone paths, and the winding trails that skirt the cliff’s edge. On clear days, the lawns feel nearly endless; in fog or storm, they seem to shrink to a thin strip of safety between the castle and the void beyond the edges of the cliffs.
Located on the grounds behind the castle, the Greenhouses and adjoining Gardens occupy most of the area behind the castle. The Greenhouses are three large, tunnel-shaped glass structures. Surrounding these on three sides are mundane gardens where food, herbs, and other produce are grown. It is the groundkeeper's task to maintain these gardens and ensure a steady supply of vegetables for the kitchen. Students sometimes volunteer to help in the gardens, or get sent here as a form of detention.
Possibly the most spectacular Quidditch Pitch in all of the United Kingdom, this Quidditch pitch is located on a flattened, terraced section of ground just outside the castle. There may be a few lost quaffles down the mountainside, though...
The pitch itself is ringed with tall, weathered stone towers topped with banners in the house colors, their charmed fabric snapping dramatically even when there’s no wind. The towers hold simple but expansive seating, rising high enough that spectators have needed to dodge rogue bludgers or quaffles on multiple occasions. Beneath the stands are locker rooms, broom storage, and a workshop where school brooms are polished, mended, or occasionally replaced after a spectacular crash.
Located on the ridge of the Mountains above Penwick Castle and nestled in a natural stone basin, sits a collection of three tarns (mountain lakes). There are two small ones and one large one. The surface of the water is glass-like and reflective, perfect for swimming in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The tarns are inhabited by small fish and some aquatic plants. The largest one is significantly deeper, and if you dive deep enough...
Beside the water stands a small stone lodge which houses the locker rooms for swimmers and skaters as well as the classroom used for Runes and Ritual Magicks.
For safety reasons, the Beastiary is located outside of the castle grounds proper. When one first approaches the school, a path veers off the main road leading up to the castle. Following this path into a forested area reveals a clearing where various creatures are kept in pens. It is the job of the Professor of Magizoology and their assistant, The Master of Beasts, to keep the beasts well-groomed and fed, preferably not on students. There are Bowtruckles, Fwoopers, Pygmy Puffs, Kneazles, Mooncalfs, Puffskeins, Jobberknolls, Fire Crabs, Runespoor, and Streelers here.
