Wyrdlan

A picturesque small town of almost a thousand magical inhabitants situated in the valley, just a short walk away from Penwick (though it's a longer journey back up the mountain). There are a few shops, squares, and parks to be enjoyed here, or you can go fishing and boating in the river, which snakes through the valley.

  • Bubbles & Bumble
Bubbles and Bumble is hard to miss, its bright sign constantly fizzing with enchanted bubbles that drift into the street below before popping. Inside, sunlight glints off rows of colourful bottles displayed on pale wooden shelves, while barrel after barrel is stacked to the ceiling, always smelling vaguely of sugar, fruit, and spice,
The shop specializes in all manner of drinks, but it is best known for Frobscottle, a wildly popular fizzy drink with bubbles that go down instead of up. Consuming this bubbly drink causes whizzpopping, more commonly known as flatulence. Some accuse Bram Bumble, the shopkeeper, of having stolen this recipe from a giant, but he adamantly denies these baseless accusations. Firewhiskey, butterbeer, and many other magical beverages can be purchased here.

  • The Scuffed Satchel
The Scuffed Satchel is a general store in Wyrdlan and always seems to have exactly what you were looking for. Want a warm pastry? The Satchel has it. Need ink for your quills? Look no further! Is your potions book getting worn out? The Satchel just so happens to have one copy available, how lucky! The owner, Ms. Fitzgerald, insists she merely has good business sense, but some say she has The Sight, and that's how she knows what to stock.
From the outside, the shop looks modest: a squat stone building with a sagging slate roof, a hand-painted swinging sign shaped like a battered satchel, and windows crowded with odd, mismatched displays. Inside, it is cozy and cluttered, with shelves crammed close, the air smelling of pastry, parchment, and polish. A small stove keeps it warm, and the counter is always piled with just the thing you didn’t know you needed.

  • Post Office
The Post Office is a picturesque red brick building that handles larger deliveries that cannot be carried by single owls and is also capable of receiving and sending Muggle post, except on Sundays. The office is largely notable for the sheer state of disarray it always seems to be in, with letters and packages and lists and stamps all scattered about. Large bronze scales are available to price your parcel by weight, and magical envelopes like Howlers and Confetti-Coughers are haphazardly displayed for purchase. Despite the surfeit of clutter, however, it's exceedingly rare for any parcel to ever be delivered late, let alone lost in the post. In contrast to their surroundings, the post office's fleet of owls is nothing but organized and professional, holding vigil from atop their intricate perches just behind the counter, ready and waiting to heroically tag-team oversized deliveries.

  • Clockwork Café
The Clockwork Café sits at the base of Wyrdlan’s old clocktower, a half-timbered structure that seems to lean just a little more each year. Whitewashed plaster panels are framed by dark wooden beams, while the great clock face gleams faintly high above. At the ground floor, a smaller clock-face sign swings above the arched door, always ticking just out of rhythm with the tower’s bell.
Inside, the Clockwork Café is snug and bustling, with mismatched wooden tables pressed against the tower’s curved walls. A polished brass-and-wood counter stands at the far wall, always crowded with cups and plates that vanish the moment the great clock chimes. Behind the counter, the tower’s central mechanism churns ceaselessly, a spectacle of enchanted gears and chains.
The menu changes every hour on the hour. If you haven't finished your drink before the clock chimes, bad luck for you, as all drinks and treats from the previous menu will vanish in a puff of smoke. Villagers boast of clever tricks to outwit the bell, but they're never true. The clock always wins.

  • Vita Exita
Vita Exita is a macabre little shop tucked into one of Wyrdlan’s quieter lanes, its windows crowded with skeletal displays, jars of petrified plants, and bushels of dried herbs. Inside, glass cases display neatly arranged bones, carnivorous plants, rare tomes of necromantic magic, and taxidermied animals.
Speaking of which, the shop also offers a taxidermy service, specialising in preserving beloved pets. Customers can even select from an array of “packages,” which include dressing the animal in outfits ranging from tiny waistcoats to witch’s hats.
The keeper of Vita Exita is Calder Vey, a tall, cadaverously thin wizard with pale hands and a habit of speaking in hushed tones, as though always in a chapel. Despite his morbid wares, he is polite to a fault, greeting customers with gentle humour and a wry smile. His glass spectacles always seem to catch the dim light just enough to make his eyes unreadable, and many leave unsure whether he is comforting or quietly terrifying.
