The Fourth Floor

The smallest of all floors, there are only a handful of classrooms and storage rooms here, as most other space is taken up by the tower of House Dranaga and the rather large Headmaster's office constructed by founder Griffith Virell himself. This floor enjoys the most gorgeous views out over the grounds and the valley below, and has the most natural light.

  • The Aetherium
Pressed into a corner of the corridor is a small tower with a winding staircase that leads up to an old, creaky door. Passing through this door reveals a grassy terrace with low castle walls and battlements on one side and mountain cliffs on the other. This courtyard-like area is about half the size of the Quidditch pitch and a bit more weathered. If the weather conditions are inappropriate for flying, instruction is usually given in the Divination Dome, or some other empty classroom is found. School brooms and basic Astronomy equipment are kept in several small, round storage spaces inside the tower used to access the Aetherium.

  • Divination Dome
What was once a large balcony used for school events was repurposed sometime in the early 20th century to serve as the school's Divination classroom. A large glass dome was erected over the balcony, the bottom portion of which is dedicated to stained glass artworks depicting various Penwick historical events, while the top portion is left clear and open to view the skies above. Here you will find large cushions surrounding tea tables instead of traditional desks, with various divination and astronomy implements available as needed. This room has a reputation for being a popular romantic rendezvous for young couples looking to enjoy the nighttime view, and tends to get patrolled more often because of it.

  • House Dranaga
By far the least subtle of all the dorm entrances, it would take a miracle for even the least observant student to miss its ostentatious splendour. The door to the Dranaga common room is flanked by three suits of armour on each side, all holding a sword inlaid with a different precious gemstone. Tapestries stand behind them, each weaving depicting a scene from Arthurian legend. In the middle stands a large wooden door, with a carving of a dragon dominating its surface. A sword-shaped doorknocker bars the entrance: only a decisive, confident knock will grant you entrance. Even the slightest seed of hesitance or doubt in yourself or your purpose will leave the knocker entirely immovable, stranding you outside.

  • Headmaster's Office
The Headmistress’s office is a half-circle chamber, its wide curve lined with tall windows. Hanging glass ornaments catch the sun and scatter it in fractured colours across the room. Near the large desk, a tall glass vessel of enchanted liquid ebbs and rises in slow, hypnotic shapes. Portraits of each past Headmaster and Headmistress fill the flattened wall from floor to ceiling. They watch, argue, and mutter amongst themselves. The curved wall of windows allows for the most picturesque view of the Penwick grounds. Troublemakers beware, from here, the Headmistress sees everything, even the students skipping lessons in the fields below.

  • Prefect Lounge
A heavy oak door marked “Prefects Only” leads into one of the most extravagant rooms in the castle, with metallic gold wallpaper, large tiered chandeliers, and intricate marble floors and columns. One side of this round room is made of enchanted glass, which can be seen through from the inside, but not from the outside, and overlooks the gardens and greenhouses below. Tapping the nose of the decorative statue of a dragon reveals a spiraling staircase which leads down into a large pool area, complete with lockers, bubble baths, slides, and even a muggle invention: poolside lounge chairs!
