The Tarns

Located on the ridge of the Mountains above Penwick Castle and nestled in a natural stone basin, sits a collection of three tarns (mountain lakes). There are two small ones and one large one. The surface of the water is glass-like and reflective, perfect for swimming in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The tarns are inhabited by small fish and some aquatic plants. The largest one is significantly deeper, and if you dive deep enough...
Beside the water stands a small stone lodge which houses the locker rooms for swimmers and skaters as well as the classroom used for Runes and Ritual Magicks.

  • Locker Rooms
Inside the stone lodge beside the tarns are locker rooms that open directly into the outdoors. There are separate rooms for boys and girls, as well as small private rooms for those who prefer privacy or exist outside of the traditional binary. Here, students can change into swimwear in summer, or skating gear in winter. The rooms are simple but well-kept, with long wooden benches, rows of enchanted lockers that dry damp clothes in minutes, and hooks charmed never to lose a scarf or glove hung on them. Oddly, in both locker rooms, there is always the same ugly, ratty striped towel draped across one bench. No matter how many times it is thrown out, burned, or banished, it inevitably returns within a day, damp to the touch and faintly smelling of lakewater.

  • Runes & Ritual Magick Classroom
In the other half of the stone lodge, this classroom provides a stunning view of the valley down below. A wide window looks out over the valley, warming the cold room in the daylight. At the center of the floor lies a permanent ritual circle inlaid with brass and silver, used for demonstrations and practice; its inscriptions can be altered with chalk or rune-stones to suit the lesson. Desks are arranged in rings around the circle, giving every student a clear view of the work. Despite no doors connecting the classroom from the locker rooms, classes are sometimes interrupted by lost first years or the loud laughter from elsewhere within the building. Those taking the class have long asked for the classroom to be moved elsewhere, but the volatile nature of runic work determines that the class stays where it is.
