Brynwell

Shortly after Sigerth Academy's founding, the bustling city of Brynwell arose, drawn in by the university campus. Reachable within thirty minutes by hot-air balloon from Wyrdlan, Brynwell is filled with fashionable department stores, banks, wand shops and more, and is the most popular place for Penwick students to buy supplies.

  • Market Square
Market Square lies in the center of Brynwell, each of the districts coming out from it like spokes of a wheel. The broad stone plaza is fileld with some small gardens, sculptures and fountians, but is mostly dominated by the towering Floo hearth whose green flames lick behind ironwork filigree. Benches circle the fireplace, worn smooth by decades of chatter, breakups, reunions, and secret handoffs of contraband pastries. Vendors cluster along the square's edges, some in permanent booths, others unfolding their carts at dawn, selling everything from pocket-charms to roasted chestnuts that float into waiting hands. The soundscape is constant, pigeons, buskers, and the ever-present whoosh of someone stepping in or out of the Floo.

  • High Street
High Street is the part of Brynwell that never seems to sleep. Even early in the morning, delivery owls flap overhead, wizards weave through crowds with paper-wrapped parcels, and polished shop window displays rearrange themselves to be even more eye-catching. Each storefront seems determined to outshine its neighbour, whether through animated displays, color-shifting signage, or the irresistible smell of something freshly baked. The buildings are all several stories tall, and a half-dozen cafés and restaurants have spilling tables onto the walk. Nearly every Penwick student at some point has come here and losa a coin pouch, a textbook, or an afternoon.

  • Scholar’s Quarter
The Scholar's Quarter is quieter than High Street, but not by much. The roads here narrow into gentle slopes lined with old brick buildings, ivy creeping up their walls. Students from Sigerth Academy spill out of lecture halls with arms full of scrolls, arguing theory or waving half-finished assignments. Bookbinders, copy shops, and quill merchants wedge themselves into every available nook, their shelves bowed with the weight of knowledge both practical and dangerous. Walk a few minutes further downhill, and the Quarter’s cramped streets widen into the broad stone path that leads directly to the university campus gates, as if the city itself exhales before handing you over.

  • Aurell Row
Aurell Row is a respite from the great hustle and bustle of Brynwell, and is home to craftsmen and artisans alike. Blown-glass orbs cool in open windows, strings of paper charms flutter between balconies, and each resident seems to know each other by name. Artists work with their doors propped open, letting the scents of beeswax, pigment, and kiln-heat spill into the road. Musicians test chord progressions on their porch steps, potters levitate half-finished vases out to dry in the sun, and textile artists hang tapestries that ripple like windblown fields. The street narrows as it winds downward until it empties into the plaza before The Aurell Museum.

  • Widderlane
Widderlane is easy to miss between the broad streets and colorful shops, it is a cut-through rather than a destination. The paving is worn flat here, the rainwater gathers in the dips and only crows and stray owls linger here, though never for long. The narrow alleyway gives way to a small court where dingy storefronts surround a weathered statue of Merlin. The shopfronts on Widderlane still have their names painted up, but the signs are flaking and dull. There's a an antiqueshop here and a toothmonger, and some others whose names are hard to read. Most of the windows are shuttered or covered with yellowed paper from the inside and if you just keep walking, you'll be at the other end in under a minute. But every now and then, someone turns down Widderlane unhurried, with purpose, and a door might swing open, and the visitor might enter, and then the street is quiet again.
