Character Freezing

As per the site rules, players are only allowed 2 active characters at once. The only exception to this are members of Staff, who may have an additional (3rd) Professor character. This rule is in place to ensure a certain level of commitment to characters and avoid having giant rosters of characters that have very few posts.

However, as writers we understand that you may sometimes get blocked on a certain character, or need something fresh. In order to facilitate this need, you may freeze a character once every 3 months. Freezing a character means you will no longer write that character for some period of time, thereby freeing up one of your active character slots.

Example

For example, suppose you have two characters that you are writing:
  • Jane Eyre, a 5th year Penwick student
  • Bingo Bob, an adult wizard
You've been on site writing for 5 months and you haven't been inspired to write Bingo Bob for a while. Maybe you just lost your inspiration, maybe you can't find the kind of threads you are looking for, or perhaps there is some other reason. You are keen on writing a new first year student character but, because both your active character slots are taken up, you cannot make a new character. This is where character freezing comes in. Since you have written Bingo Bob for more than 3 months and haven't frozen a character in your 5 months on site, you are allowed to freeze the character Bingo Bob.

This means that you will no longer write Bingo Bob and lose the ability to post as Bingo Bob. In return, you regain the active character slot that Bingo Bob occupied. Since Bingo Bob is frozen and not actively being written, you now have 1 free slot to make your first year character!

Should you at a later point wish to resume writing Bingo Bob, you can unfreeze him, but you would have to freeze a different active character to make place.

Rules

  • You must have had an active (approved) character on site for more than 3 months.
  • You may only freeze/unfreeze a character once every 3 months.
  • Unfreezing a character while simultaneously freezing an active character (basically swapping active characters) counts as a single freeze/unfreeze action. In other words: you may swap active characters once per 3 months, you don't have to wait for 6 months to do this.

What happens to my frozen character?

While your character may be frozen, time is not. Your character will still continue aging and graduating into higher year(s) if they are attending Penwick.

Additionally, frozen characters are added to the "Frozen" group. This makes the character/account unable to post. You can still log in on the character and your aptitudes and money will be preserved (decaying inventory items will however resume decaying). You can still send and receive site DMs from a frozen character account.
