Classes

At Penwick, the following classes are taught year-round from year one through to year seven:

Foundational Magic
In this course students are taught how magic works and learn the necessary skills to improve all basic spellcasting such as proper wand technique and enunciation. The spells taught in this course are common, everyday spells with practical applications. Early years focus on the foundations of magic while in later years students are taught more advanced and uncommon spells which will aid them in daily life.

Transfiguration
Focuses on symbolic change and identity as much as physical form, as the two are thought by some to be linked. Does not use actual physics because why would we ever want to think about real physics and atoms on a harry potter roleplay site.

Alchemy
Years 1 and 2 focus on the harvest, care, and use of magical plants, as well as non-magical plants often found in potions. Students are taught non-magical uses for their ingredients as well to create natural healing balms and the like. Once year 3 arrives, students are taught traditional brewing along with local herbalism and lore.

Lore & Language
Magical traditions, historical events, and ancient written/spoken magical languages (including runes). Less of memorizing dates and boring reports (though those still exist), and more connecting the through-line throughout history

Aether Studies
A mix of practical flying instruction and the study of stars and cosmic entities.

Non-Wizarding Perspectives
Muggle and cultural studies, including goblin society, hags, centaurs, etc. Also instructs basic mathematical and reading/writing skills.

Applied Magic
DADA except for beyond just "defense". Practical magic, essentially. "you won't need this daily, but just in case you have a boggart in your closet, here is what you should do"

Electives

From year three on out, students must enter into at least one additional elective class(es)

Runes & Ritual Magicks
The construction of wards, object enchantment, and the power of written magic (runes). Includes aspect of arithmancy and divination, but these are not the main focus

Magizoology
CoMC, as well as advanced herbology, plants that are indeed plants but behave more like creatures (chomping cabbages, mandrakes, etc)

Forgotten Arts
A class less about learning curriculum and more about learning the older ways of magic; spells that have gone out of style, wandlore, investigating magical objects, etc. Usually popular with House Mercator.

Divination
The study of prophecy, fortune telling, dream interpretation, and folklore of dreamwalking and astral projection
