Below you can find a full list of all available spells on Penwick. Spells are purchased using Advancement Tokens, which you can read more about here: click me

Spells are organized per tier going from Tier 0 (free spells) to Tier 5 (extremely advanced spells). Additionally, there is a Story Tier which are spells that can only be earned in a special way, which you can read more about in its dedicated section here. Rest assured that the Story Tier only contains invented spells that expand upon the Harry Potter lore. All standard Harry Potter spells are accessible to all characters through purchasing them with Advancement Tokens.

As noted before, each spell requires a certain amount of AT (Advancement Tokens) to purchase. Since AT is also used to purchase abilities on your character, you will have to make a careful decision between buying spells versus buying abilities.

Only some spells have special requirements or prerequisites. It is therefore entirely possible to give your character advanced spells early on, if you believe this would suit them. Advanced spells are however more costly, and so choosing to go this route means you will have fewer AT available to invest elsewhere.

Alpha note: during alpha spells may move around into a different tier, be merged (for example, there might just be one weather-modifying spell instead of separate rain/snow variants), etc. The cost of spells may also change, and not all incantations have been fully validated yet.

Spells in certain tier will always be priced within a certain range. These ranges are as follows:

Tier 0 Spells

Tier 0 spells are special because they are free and do not require any Advancement Tokens to purchase. This means you automatically have access to these spells and can use them freely in your roleplay at any time, regardless of whether your character is a student, freshman or adult. Naturally, you are also at liberty to not use them.

While all Tier 0 spells are free, these free spells are bound to your year level at Penwick. If you are a college student at Sigerth or an Adult character, you automatically have all Tier 0 spells.

Story Tier Spells

Story Tier spells are a special category of spells. These spells cannot be purchased with Advancement Tokens and can only be earned. The methods of earning these spells are:
  • Your character attends a class taught by a Professor. Note, you can't just say you did, you have to actually write with other students and a Professor character who is hosting the class. By the end of the class you will be awarded the spell.
  • Your character participates in a moderated adventure and is awarded a spell at the end.
  • Your Sigerth or Adult character invents a new spell (not yet available)
Since in-character classes and moderated adventures are an infrequent occurrence and cannot always be attended by everyone, there is a secondary way to earn Story Tier spells and that is through peer-to-peer teaching. This means that a student character, or any other character, who has the spell because they either took part in an adventure, attended a class, or because someone else taught it to them, can teach it to another player. The only requirements for teaching a spell are these:
  • The character teaching the spell must have the spell in their inventory in order to be able to teach it.
  • The thread where the spell is taught must have at least 2 posts from both the teaching character and the receiving character.
  • You are strongly encouraged, but not required, to perform a set of dice rolls to determine if the spell was successfully learned. Even unfavourable outcomes from these rolls can generate new story and plots for your character, which is why it is recommend, but we won't force you to let the dice dictate the outcome if you don't want them to. The dice rolls you can optionally perform are:
    • Take the Year Level of the Story Tier Spell and multiply it by 5. Then roll a 1d20+Spirit using the site's diceroller. If the outcome of this roll meets or exceeds the calculated value, you'll have passed the first stage of learning the spells. For example, a fifth-year Story Tier spell = 5 * 5 = 25. So you have to roll 25 or above to pass this stage. This roll represents the focus of your character and tells you if they got the incantation and wand movement right. You can claim to have learned the spell if you pass this roll.
    • Optional: If you want to, you can take the same threshold as calculated by multiplication, but now roll 1d20+Sorcery using the site's diceroller. This roll represents how well your character performed the spell. You can take this outcome into account when writing the thread. You can also combine this with a 1d20+Agility to determine if the spell hit its target, if you believe it to be applicable. These rolls have no bearing on whether your character learned the spell or not, just how well they did the first time they tried it. Remember: these rolls are entirely optional.
Importantly, Story Tier spells are almost exclusively flavour spells, meaning they won't give your character any kind of powerful ability. These spells should be thought of more like little collectables or medals which may be useful in some extremely niche situations, but whose end result could also be achieved through (a combination of) regular, purchasable spells. Your character is not weaker or missing out on some key spell if they don't have any Story Tier spells.
