Rhiannon favours long, flowing robes in jewel tones or muted earth shades. There’s always something slightly eccentric in her presentation: a mismatched ring, a charm tied to her belt, etc etc
Personality Description
Rhiannon Pryce is easily described as an eccentric with a heart of gold. She carries herself with a quiet warmth that makes her approachable, yet she never wavers from being stern when needed. Students quickly learn she is not a headmistress to fear, but one to respect: she listens carefully, weighs each matter with fairness, and delivers judgment in a way that feels consistent, even when it stings. A prankster who endangers others will find her firm hand; a student who makes an honest mistake will find her guidance.
Beneath her poise, however, lies a fragile undercurrent of self-doubt. Rhiannon knows her appointment is controversial, tied to her father’s legacy, and she wrestles daily with the need to prove, to both the school and herself, that she is capable in her own right.
She can often be seen wandering Penwick’s halls late at night, slippers brushing against the old stone, trying to "listen to the heartbeat of the castle". Whispers say she confides in the portraits when she thinks no one is watching.
Backstory
Rhiannon was born on an unusually warm October evening in the small village of Plwmp, Wales. The third of what would eventually become seven children, the Pryce family was as large and lively as they were creative. Her father was the black sheep of the family, so to speak, claiming to not have a bone of creativity in his body (this was entirely untrue), instead preferring politics, police, and his role as Penwick's headmaster. He happily took on the role of the family "Benefactor", supplying his wife (who specialized in pottery) and children with the support and supplies to make their dreams a reality.
From the time she could crawl, Rhiannon found her joy in the dirt. Picking wild strawberries that stained her clothes, learning how to make flower crowns from blossoms she found near her home, even volunteering to de-gnome the garden when the time came.
When she arrived at Penwick, she was sorted into Floranti. She was quite happy, as Viviane Floranti's question during her Interview was the only one that she thought worth answering. Rhiannon was far from brilliant at school, always seeming to be a step behind her peers. But she wasn't bothered by it, she knew she would understand in her own time. And indeed she did, for her professors learned that while she took longer than most to comprehend spells and techniques, once she got it, she was spectacular. This patience carried into her social life as well. She never ran with the "popular" crowd, only once invited to sit at a mezzanine table, and was happy with her small but tight group of friends who valued her steadiness. She was the one who remembered birthdays, who listened when others bickered until she could step in with a neutral perspective, and who would help comfort you over a poor grade, reminding you that life is more than letters on an exam.
While she was challenged by school, she showed an unusual gift in moments of failure. If a spell went wrong, hers or someone else’s, she didn’t panic. Instead, she carefully unwound the mistake, corrected the process, and reassured whoever was flustered beside her. Professors noticed that while Rhiannon wasn’t dazzling in exams, she had a rare instinct for untangling magical errors.
After graduating Penwick, her favourite professors encouraged Rhiannon to try the Accidental Magic Reversal Department at the Ministry. She knew firsthand the embarrassment of failed magic, the sting of being called slow or careless, and she wanted to help others in those moments. Her patience, her calm, and her compassion made her well-suited to a department often dismissed as thankless, and often found herself the first to explain to Muggle parents what their child was.
When her father announced he would retire as headmaster to accept a position on the school's Board of Governors, Rhiannon believed nothing in her life would change. How wrong she was, as in a move many considered nepotistic, the Board appointed Rhiannon as his successor. She had never taught, never sought leadership, and many were outraged at the decision, citing capable professors within Penwick's own walls who should have been named in her stead. Rhiannon herself thought the same. But she accepted, the look of pride in her father's eyes too hard for her to turn down.
Now in her first year as headmistress, she finds herself in a precarious position. Welcomed by some faculty and students, shunned by others. She knows she isn’t her father, nor the replacement many hoped for, but she believes growth takes time, and she is ready to prove herself one patient season at a time.
First Instance of Accidental Magic
At age four, Rhiannon's two elder brothers had picked up the habit of calling her "Non-non", since she chewed with her mouth open when she was younger. She found this hurtful, begging them to stop, but on they went as older brothers do. Once when they were simply chanting the nickname at the dinner table, Rhiannon shouted at them to "Shut it!"
And they did. Their mouths were stuck shut, and they began to panic. It didn't take long for Mr. and Mrs. Pryce to free the boys' mouths and give all three a stern talking to.
