Physical Description
Hazel has dark brown hair, that has an erratic curl nature to it. It sometimes forms beautiful ringlet curls; at other times, it is just a bushy mess. It is thick, and has subtle natural highlights from how much time she spends in the sun. Her eyes are brownish, green and she has a tanned complexion. Hazel is tall for her age, having had early growth spurts ahead of many of her peers. She is fairly athletic; she spends a lot of time outside walking and playing with her family's dog, and enjoys climbing trees, hiking, exploring and riding her bike. Her build reflects this lifestyle.
Personality Description
Hazel is a kind and cheerful kid, known for her friendly and warming smile. She makes friends easily and has a great amount of empathy for someone her age. She is smart and an overachiever at the muggle school she attended prior to Penwick. She was the captain of her school house, first clarinet in the school concert band, and a highly skilled netball player, her height giving her a clear advantage over many other kids her age. She has varied interests, and does not define herself particularly by any of them. She has a great sense of integrity, and the courage to speak up when she feels it is right.
Backstory
Hazel has had a pretty normal childhood up until this point. However, that may depend on the reader's point of view. Her parents, Andrew and Ravena, are both Wixborn but Hazel and her older brother, Jamie, have grown up in a family non-magical home life. Hazel's parents, though, have a very progressive view of child rearing and the separation of the magical and non-magical communities. They are careful not to anything or put the kids in positions that could risk breaching the Statue of Secrecy, but they also think it is important for themselves and their children to learn to live in muggle society. Both Hazel and her brother were enrolled in muggle kindergarten and then attended muggle elementary school up until their acceptance to Penwick, which was easily explained away as they were being sent away to a boarding school, which was not a foreign concept for Scottish muggles.
As they grew up basically as muggles, Hazel's pass times reflect this. She enjoys riding her bike around St Andrews and through the countryside, climbing trees, feeding carrots to horses she finds, swimming, and hanging out her with friends on the high street, or at the beach eating some ice cream. She also likes to find time to read adventure and fantasy novels, and generally quite enjoys her muggle school work.
First Instance of Accidental Magic
Hazel's first instance of accidental magic use was not exactly a happy memory. When she was 9 years old, her older brother, then 12 years old, was teasing her, and then when he got bored of it, began obnoxiously blatantly ignoring her as she tried to talk to him and get him to take back his cruel words. She was so upset and angry, apparently she caused a nearby murder of crows to swarm and attack her brother. He managed to run into the house in time before too much damage was done. Once the door was closed, the crows dispersed, but not before her parents came barreling outside to pull Hazel quickly into the house, looking up and down their street to make sure there were no witnesses.
When Hazel was inside, she saw her brother had a series of scratches and cuts across his face and arms from the crows' beaks and talons. She instantly felt guilty, but naturally, she had no control over the situation, and of course had not intended anything like this happen. Once she had calmed down and was able to explain, her parents understood that it was her magic manifesting, but Hazel still carries a great amount of guilt over the incident.
