The courtyard forms a rectangular quad covered in neatly trimmed grass, cut through by two broad walkways that meet in the centre. A low circular plinth marks the crossing point, a convenient place to sit or dump bags between lessons. Atop the plinth lies the Celestial Sundial, a polished brass gnomon whose shadow is seemingly not tied to the sun at all, as day and night it warps across the yard and touches stone etchings that represent the hour, date, month, year, and lunar phase. A colonnade of stone columns provides shelter on the perimeter of the courtyard, where seasonal banners hang and flutter.

It was Hazel’s third day at Penwick, and her second day of classes. The last few days were such a rollercoaster she was really beginning to struggle to catch her breath and continue absorbing everything. She was thankful their first week wasn’t a full week; September 1st was a Tuesday, so their classes only started on Wednesday. Regardless, the adjustment was more than she was expecting.

It was lunchtime, and surprisingly she wasn’t all that hungry. This was unusual, as she was usually starving for every meal. But that wasn’t the case for the moment. She didn’t think about it too much; she figured she would take her loss of appetite as an opportunity to take some time until her next class to relax a bit and maybe take in some fresh air.

Hazel had managed to navigate her way to the courtyard. She wasn’t surprised to find many other older students sprawled out on the lawns, soaking up the early Autumn sun. Feeling a bit more at ease, she found herself a spot on the lawns to do her own spot of sunbaking. She set down her bag, heavy with all her new books and stationary, and sat down cross legged on the grass.

Hazel pulled out her timetable from her robe’s pockets, reflecting on the last day of classes and this morning, before thinking ahead to her classes in the afternoon. She had a growing mountain of homework already forming, and looking ahead, it was likely only going to continue to get bigger and bigger. It was common practice in muggle schools, at least, it was at her school, that the first week was homework free to allow students to adjust to school life again. The wizarding world didn’t seem to get that memo. She hoped she would have some time over the weekend to catch up.

Folding up her timetable and stuffing it back in her robes, Hazel looked around again at the other students around the quad. She vaguely wondered where her brother was at the moment. Strangely, she hadn’t seen him at all since getting on the Aderyn. Naturally, as soon as he had spotted his friends, he said his goodbyes and disappeared, leaving Hazel by herself to navigate finding a seat and such on the Aderyn. While it wasn’t unexpected behavior from her brother, it still stung. Every interaction was laced with that sunken hope that he might actually decide to be a brother, that he might take an interest in her. But she always ended up disappointed.

Hazel began to feel a tug in her chest, so at the moment she tried her best to take her mind off of her brother, and how lonely she suddenly felt. Her eyes became blurry as tears began to cloud her vision, so she tried distracting herself by rummaging through her bag for her Alchemy textbook. She pulled it out and flipped it open to the first chapter. Her intention was to start preparing for the class ahead of her that afternoon, but she just found herself mindlessly turning the pages, with a bit more force than was entirely necessary.

It wasn’t proving much of a good distraction.
