Graduation Is Here!

On July 1st, all Penwick.ink characters will year-up into their next in-character year. We call this process "graduation"!

This is when yearly mechanical progression happens. Characters are able to receive the appropriate yearly updates for their Origin, including Aptitude Point increases, Advancement Token increases, and any yearly Tier 0 spell access that applies to their new year.

Because this is a manual process, there may be errors. If you spot any, let us know!

What do you need to do?
  • Have an approved character.
  • Apply for your AP increases in this thread
  • Update your character encyclopedia to have their new year
  • Buy your new Tier 0 spells
  • That's it!

FAQ

Can I still finish older threads after July 1st?
Yes! Writing or finishing threads that are before the current date is called "backdating". You can backdate as far as you'd like!

So do I just... Not do anything until September 1st?
We would be terrible hosts if we gave you nothing to do for months! Another announcement will be posted very soon explaining how summer on Penwick.ink functions.

I joined recently. Will my still move up?
Yes, as long as your character was approved before July 1st.

What happens if my character was not approved in time?
You will join the next year's cohort. You may need to change your character's birth year to compensate!

Does this apply to Sigerth students or adult characters?
Yes! Sigerth students and adult characters also receive their annual progression during graduation.

Where do I check my character’s AP and AT progression?
You can find this in the Rules & Systems section under your character’s Origin table.

I am confused.
Not technically a question. If you're confused, the staff team is always available for questions and clarification!

Summer Thread Dating

Normally on Penwick.ink, we allow forward-dating up to one month in advance. However, there is one exception for summer...

During the real-life months of July and August, you may forward-date threads as far ahead as September 30th.

This exception exists so that players who join during the summer can still begin writing their characters during the active school year instead of waiting until September in real life.

On September 1st, the rule resets to be 1 month in advance.

This means that you can begin writing your character's next school year adventures right away if you'd like. Happy threading!

Shops!

Shops are an extensive, experimental feature that has been added. Right now, there is no real purpose to shops other than flavor and having collectibles. In the future there will be some items which you have to own on your player account in order to be allowed to claim to have them, like brooms and potions.

The shop system comes with a few cool features:
  • Simulated economy. Shops do not have an infinite stock of items. Items are instead produced through production chains, and shops trade with each other (and users) in order to be able to produce the goods they want to produce. This has several impacts. There is real scarcity of rare items in the economy, prices are dynamic and change over time, and players can create market disruptions, which in turn can lead to story and plot. A simulation step runs every five minutes.
  • Trading. You can trade items with other players by creating a trade request. The other user will receive your request and may choose to accept it, deny it, or return a counter-offer. You can create a trade request from the profile page of your character account.
  • Gifting. You can gift items or money to other players from the profile page of your character account.
  • TBA: Crafting. It is not available yet, but it will be soon. The whole shopping system is centered around crafting. Shops in the simulated economy craft their products from items that they trade and buy from each other. In the future, players will be able to buy crafting recipes allowing them to produce goods from raw materials. Crafting includes brewing potions and how good of a product one ends up making depends on the character's aptitudes, abilities, and a bit of luck and time. Accidents can occur, with sometimes interesting results...
Every current player character has been given 10 galleons (4390 knuts) of money to buy some stuff with, should they so desire. You can see the amount of money on your account here:

You can view some of the early shops here: viewforum.php?f=111

In order to buy items, click and drag an item from one of the cabinets onto the counter, then press the receipt button in the top left:

You can sell items back to the shop by pressing the coin button next to the receipt button on the counter, but the shop will often give you less money for your item than your original purchase price.

You can view your inventory of items by going to your character account's profile:
